in the spirit of the times
a 20 second manifesto for the contemporary jeweler / artist :
go outside and look around
harness and transmit your youth
remember to have fun
keep going
make dope ass shit
change does not mean death; don’t fall for the eulogy talk
bling is ok
fuck the manifesto
Enthusiasm like yours is exactly what we need!
Your enthusiasm is exactly what we need!
Phew, thanks for the fresh air! (And I agree btw, the end of painting never seems to get as stuffy as this conversation was starting to become…)
I heard Susan Cohn in Australia drive a couple of nails into the coffin of art/contemporary jewellery back in 2011 (in her words, “the Contemporary Jewellery Movement has failed”,) and I didn’t believe it then so I’m a little hard pressed to convert to a believer now, despite all the press.
I’m not sure why it is suddenly all over the jewellery world, though perhaps the gradual changing of the guard to the uncultured ‘yoof’ is to blame? But yes, it has come up in recent discussions with my jewellery friends, and generally they are a group who have not achieved the success of some of those who are currently lining themselves up to memorialise art jewellery, so I am inclined to think it generational, especially given the current proliferation of collectives around the globe.
Thanks as always for the great blog, especially this prompt to think and talk about current events, on an independent forum.
